We all have a tendency to set aside what is important. It is classic to say you’ll never learn the value of something until it is no longer with you. But pushing it a little further, we can ask why let it go if it is important, why set it aside. Perhaps it was never important on the first place.

Feeling Sad Makes Us More Creative (The Frontal... →
psychotherapy:
For thousands of years, people have speculated that there’s some correlation between sadness and creativity, so that people who are a little bit miserable (think Van Gogh, or Dylan in 1965, or Virginia Woolf) are also the most innovative. Aristotle was there first, stating in the 4th century B.C.E. “that all men who have attained excellence in philosophy, in poetry, in art and in...

psychotherapy:
Where are you right now? Maybe you are at home, the office or a coffee shop—but such responses provide only a partial answer to the question at hand. Asked another way, what is the location of your “self” as you read this sentence? Like most people, you probably have a strong sense that your conscious self is housed within your physical body, regardless of your surroundings. But...

Digital Devices Deprive Brain of Needed Downtime... →
psychotherapy:
The technology makes the tiniest windows of time entertaining, and potentially productive. But scientists point to an unanticipated side effect: when people keep their brains busy with digital input, they are forfeiting downtime that could allow them to better learn and remember information, or come up with new ideas…
“Almost certainly, downtime lets the brain go over experiences...

psychotherapy:
Studies have found that upon entering an office, people behave more competitively when they see a sharp leather briefcase on the desk, they talk more softly when there is a picture of a library on the wall, and they keep their desk tidier when there is a vague scent of cleaning agent in the air. But none of them are consciously aware of the influence of their environment.

psychotherapy:
While women are often characterized as the more emotionally sensitive of the sexes, new research published in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior suggests that, when it comes to the heartache following a failed romance, men may actually suffer more than women.
The research, conducted by sociologists at Wake Forest University and Florida State University and highlighted by...

When it comes to pain, the two competing schools of thought are that it’s either “all in your head” or “all in your body.” A new study led by University of Oxford researchers indicates that, instead, pain is an amalgam of the two…

The cure for procrastination? Forgive yourself!... →
psychotherapy:
“There are so many things you’d rather be doing than what you ought to be doing and what happens is that you delay doing what you ought. All the evidence shows that this procrastination is bad for you, for your productivity, your school grades, for your health. But still we keep putting things off. Until. Tomorrow. Now Michael Wohl and colleagues have proposed a rather surprising...

Famous - Naomi Shihab Nye
The river is famous to the fish. The loud voice is famous to silence, which knew it would inherit the earth before anybody said so. The cat sleeping on the fence is famous to the birds watching him from the birdhouse. The tear is famous, briefly, to the cheek. The...

psychotherapy:
People with Williams syndrome — a rare genetic disorder with a variety of symptoms — are known for being almost compulsively loving and trusting. The syndrome is often called the “anti-autism” because people with Williams, rather than isolating themselves from others, are hyper-social. Children with Williams, for example, often climb into cars with perfect strangers or tell...

New government data suggests that depression and smoking may be more intertwined than previously known. The new survey data suggests that people with depression are more likely to be smokers than those without.
According to government data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) taken from 2005 to 2008, 43 percent of adult smokers age 20 and older have...
